There are many factors that contribute to running a successful business like having a marketable product or service , and having a sound strategy. While these factors are important, they’re not the ones that determine your business’s success.
For me, the most important aspect of a successful business is the people.
Here’s why – you can have the best product in the world – the most marketable idea ! – but it’s up to the team to execute!
When I’m hiring for Herjavec Group, I’m not looking for people who are just like me – I know for certain that wouldn’t work ! I want people with their own identities, who want to achieve something on their own terms and are hungry to learn.
Our team members need to see Herjavec Group as part of their journey. I often say to my team “all the world owes you is an opportunity” – and I encourage them to push and drive their careers forward at HG.
I’ve had a history of hiring competitive athletes because of their discipline, drive and focus – but that’s not to say that all HG employees are Olympians (only 2!). When I’m interviewing I focus on your ability to do the job, your hunger, your energy and your leadership ability. I value these traits in the people at Herjavec Group because they reflect my own core values.
I’ve been fortunate enough to work with individuals who are resilient. They may get knocked down seven times, but they stand up eight. It’s motivating to me as their leader to see that kind of passion day in and day out. We’re in a very innovative and dynamic space – cybersecurity. I need to have a team driven towards continuous improvement and always challenging the status quo. The best way of guaranteeing your personal success is to help guarantee the success of everyone around you — your staff, your customers, and of course, your clients.
I believe in my team. We are a group of highly motivated and dedicated security specialists, driven to excel and innovate. It’s hard to believe but it’s been 15 years since we founded Herjavec Group! We were 3 people then – and now at 300 people globally, with offices across Canada, the United States and even in the United Kingdom, I firmly believe we are in the right place, at the right time, with the right team. 15 years and going strong. You don’t survive in this space (or any space really !) without incredible people and amazing talent.
So to all the people leaders out there – the next time you’re feeling like you’re in it alone, or that you just don’t have the answers , look to your team. That’s the real secret sauce.
